Intermodal Roadside Inspection

This video illustrates the procedural steps followed by law enforcement when conducting a Level 1 roadside inspection as performed in accordance with the North American Standard Inspection procedures developed by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.

Intermodal Pre-Trip Inspection

The video below is a recording of the inspection performed by the driver of intermodal equipment. The process is based upon the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and illustrates the procedural steps to be followed by a driver prior to taking an intermodal chassis on the road.

STANDARD INDUSTRY SAFETY RULES AND PROCEDURES

AT INTERMODAL FACILITIES

The Standard Industry Safety Rules and Procedures at Intermodal Facilities task force was formed to identify initiatives, activities or processes that can influence and reduce the frequency of drayage mishaps on terminals, yards and depots. The Task Force developed the Intermodal Terminal Drayman Safety Handbook, a Recommended Practice to Improve Safety on Intermodal Terminals, for distribution to drayman that serve Intermodal Terminals.

The Task Force has also developed six Recommended Practices to reduce collisions on intermodal terminals. They are detailed on a Safety Pocket Card, suitable to be distributed to the intermodal drayage community.

Introduction of Stretch & Retract Operation for Combo Chassis
Step 1 – Connect the tractor to the chassis.
Step 2 Connect the Air Lock Gladhand to the tractor’s emergency air line. Make sure the Service Gladhand (the blue one) and Emergency Gladhand(the red one) is disconnected.

Step 2 – Connect the Air Lock Gladhand to the tractor’s emergency air line. Make sure the Service Gladhand (the blue one) and Emergency Gladhand(the red one) is disconnected.

Step 3 Put air to the chassis and the air chamber of the lock pin is released. The lock pin will retract.

Step 4 – Pull the front frame forward slowly and stop it when the lock pin is near to the rear lock hole.

Step 5 – .Disconnect the Air Lock Gladhand and the air chamber of the lock pin is fasten.
Step 6 – Pull the front frame forward slowly again until the pin is pushed out of the lock hole.

Step 7 – Connect the Service Gladhand and Emergency Gladhand.

NOTE: Make sure the lock pin is completely pushed out and locked in the hole before hit the road.
